The central processing unit (CPU) is also known as the brain of the computer. It does the entire thinking part for a computer.A CPU helps in processing the data and the information that we give to the computer. It comprises of three main parts :
ALU ( Arithmatic and Logical unit) ,
CU ( Control unit)
MU ( Memory unit )
Arithmatic and Logical unit
Arithmatic and logical unit is that part of the CPU which does the entire mathematical calculations for the computer.Control Unit controls the other operations being processed inside a computer.
Control unit
control all the operations of the computer.
Decodes instructions
Determinates the storage of instructions and data
Memory Unit
Received data
Holds it
Delivers it according the instructions from control unit.
Access data -------- Input
Process data -------- Processing
Produce result ------- output
Store output ---------- Storage.
Input (data)
Input is the raw information entered into a computer from the input devices. It is the collection of letters, Numbers,Images etc..
Process
Process is the operation of data as per given Instructions. It is totally internal process of the computer.
Output
Output is the processed data given by computer after data processing .Output is also called as result. We can save the result in the storage devices for the future use.
Storage
Unit & Description | |
---|---|
1 | Bit (Binary Digit) A binary digit is logical 0 and 1 representing a passive or an active state of a component in an electric circuit. |
2 | Nibble A group of 4 bits is called nibble. |
3 | Byte A group of 8 bits is called byte. A byte is the smallest unit, which can represent a data item or a character. |
4 | Word A computer word, like a byte, is a group of fixed number of bits processed as a unit, which varies from computer to computer but is fixed for each computer. The length of a computer word is called word-size or word length. It may be as small as 8 bits or may be as long as 96 bits. A computer stores the information in the form of computer words. |
The following table lists some higher storage units −
S.No. | Unit & Description |
---|---|
1 | Kilobyte (KB) 1 KB = 1024 Bytes |
2 | Megabyte (MB) 1 MB = 1024 KB |
3 | GigaByte (GB) 1 GB = 1024 MB |
4 | TeraByte (TB) 1 TB = 1024 GB |
5 | PetaByte (PB) 1 PB = 1024 TB |
A storage device is a piece of computer hardware used for saving, carrying and pulling out data. It can keep and retain information short-term or long-term. It can be a device inside or outside a computer or server. Other terms for storage device is storage medium or storage media.
A storage device is one of the basic elements of any computer device. It almost saves all data and applications in a computer except for hardware firmware. It comes in different shapes and sizes depending on the needs and functionalities.
